India's largest airline, IndiGo, announced the resignation of its CEO Pieter Elbers amid recent operational disruptions. Elbers, who assumed leadership over three years ago, led significant growth, including a fleet expansion to over 440 aircraft and a landmark order of 500 Airbus A320-family aircraft. Despite these achievements, the airline faced its worst crisis in December 2025, when disruptions caused over 2,500 flight cancellations and nearly 1,900 delays, impacting over 300,000 passengers nationwide.
In the wake of this crisis, the airline has appointed Rahul Bhatia, the managing director of InterGlobe Aviation, as interim CEO while searching for a permanent replacement. Bhatia's leadership aims to reinforce the company's culture and improve operational performance, according to statements from the board Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta. Bhatia expressed a strong sense of responsibility, reflecting his long-standing involvement in the company's growth over the past two decades.
Background and Future Outlook
During his tenure, Pieter Elbers contributed to the airline's rapid expansion, including revenue surpassing $10 billion annually. However, operational challenges related to regulations aimed at preventing pilot fatigue exposed vulnerabilities in the carrier's management strategies. The airline is now focused on stabilizing and restoring reliability as it seeks a new long-term leader, signaling a commitment to recovering from recent setbacks.
