IndiGo Airlines has recently faced significant operational challenges, prompting regulatory intervention by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India. After a series of cancellations totaling approximately 4,500 flights early December, the airline's capacity guidance has been revised downward, and safety inspections have been initiated at multiple airports across the country.
The DGCA ordered a 10% capacity reduction and established oversight teams to monitor IndiGo's recovery efforts. This included deploying inspectors at airports such as Nagpur, Jaipur, Bhopal, and others to evaluate safety and passenger facilitation measures. In response to the disruptions, the regulator also granted a temporary exemption from certain flight duty time limitations for A320-200 pilots until February 10, 2026, aiming to stabilize the airline's operations.
Meanwhile, SpiceJet announced plans to add up to 100 daily flights in the upcoming winter schedule, attempting to fill the capacity gap left by IndiGo's restrictions. This move indicates resilient demand on key routes and the airline’s efforts to expand its fleet, which includes reactivating over 20 aircraft through leasing agreements and fleet management strategies.
The situation underscores ongoing safety and operational concerns within India's aviation sector, with the DGCA closely overseeing airline compliance and safety standards to prevent future disruptions.
