Indian airline IndiGo has appointed Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, led by Captain John Illson, to independently review recent operational disruptions that resulted in over 3,000 cancellations and numerous delays. The airline’s decision comes after facing significant operational challenges since December 3, which have impacted thousands of passengers and attracted scrutiny from transportation authorities.
Captain Illson, who has extensive experience across major aviation organizations including the FAA, ICAO, and IATA, will analyze the causes of the disruptions. IndiGo stated that the aim of this review is to identify contributing factors and develop strategies to prevent future incidents. The move was recommended by the airline's Crisis Management Group as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance operational stability.
The disruptions were attributed to a combination of adverse weather, technical faults, scheduling changes for the winter season, congestion in the airspace, and recent crew rostering updates. IndiGo’s chairman, Vikram Singh Mehta, denied allegations of deliberate sabotage, attributing the issues to a series of unforeseen events that pushed the airline's systems beyond their limits. The airline has committed to compensate affected customers with vouchers worth ₹10,000 and has processed refunds exceeding one billion rupees.
The Indian government has mandated a 10% reduction in airline operations, which could lead to further cancellations, as IndiGo works to restore normal operations. Despite these challenges, the airline maintains that all 138 destinations are connected and that its on-time performance remains within acceptable standards. IndiGo continues to focus on stabilizing its network and ensuring passenger safety and satisfaction.
