India's largest airline, IndiGo, encountered a major operational crisis in December 2025, as a result of the enforcement of new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules. These regulations, aimed at improving pilot safety through controlled duty hours and mandated rest periods, led to a dramatic reduction in crew availability. At multiple airports including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, creating widespread disruption during the peak travel season.

The crisis resulted in stranded passengers and skyrocketing fares, with domestic ticket prices reaching up to Rs 80,000. Many airline industry experts believe that management failures and insufficient preparation by airlines contributed to the severity of the disruption. The DGCA, India's civil aviation regulator, had introduced the new rules in January 2024, with full implementation scheduled for November 2025. Despite this, the scale of the problem surprised many, raising questions about the sector's readiness and resilience.

Government Response and Industry Implications

In response, authorities temporarily suspended some FDTL provisions to help stabilize operations, while IndiGo apologized publicly and offered refunds and assistance to stranded passengers. Critics, including political leaders and aviation experts, pointed out that such crises reveal deeper issues related to market monopolies in the aviation sector, which reduce competition and heighten systemic risks.

The incident has prompted calls for reform, including increased market competition, improved crew management, and strengthened passenger rights. As stakeholders look to avoid future disruptions, there is consensus that systemic structural changes are necessary to bolster the safety, efficiency, and fairness of Indian civil aviation.
