IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has faced significant operational issues resulting in nearly 3,000 flight cancellations over the past 35 days, with an additional 1,500 cancellations expected in the near term. Despite this, analysts believe that the airline’s large market share and operational capacity will help contain the financial impact. The cancellations are estimated to affect less than 2.5% of total flights in the December quarter. Before the disruptions, IndiGo could operate approximately 2,200-2,300 flights daily, translating to around 198,000 to 200,000 flights per quarter.
Operational challenges began in early November, but the airline’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, assured that the situation was improving, with full restoration of flights anticipated between December 10 and 15. An analyst from Anand Rathi, Shobit Singhal, stated that the impact on the company's top line would be limited, projecting a 5-7% reduction if cancellations persist. The airline has also expanded its winter schedule, increasing departures per week by 6% compared to the summer timetable, which may support better pricing power.
Industry outlook and future prospects
Industry analysts expect these disruptions to give IndiGo a competitive advantage over rivals such as Air India, which has announced a 3% reduction in flight operations for the winter season. Morgan Stanley and Citi have maintained positive outlooks on IndiGo’s stock, citing potential fare increases and operational resilience. The airline aims to fully restore its flight operations soon, with an expected recovery in margins and profitability as it regains normalcy from recent disruptions.
