Indonesia and Turkey have recently expanded their civil aviation cooperation to include additional destinations and increased flight rights. Following bilateral consultations held in Istanbul on October 22-23, both countries agreed to broaden their air service networks and enhance bilateral air traffic volume, which is expected to facilitate greater tourism, business exchanges, and regional connectivity.
The agreement involves Indonesia adding eight new destinations such as Medan, Yogyakarta, and Manado, while Turkey plans to include İzmir and Bodrum alongside Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya. Additionally, the approved flight rights have more than doubled, rising from 14 to 32 weekly flights, promising increased operational flexibility for airlines.
Background and Implications
This development follows earlier discussions between President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting in February 2025, emphasizing the importance of expanding direct flight routes and network connectivity. The recent signing reinforces mutual commitments to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties through aviation.
Furthermore, the bilateral agreement opens avenues for increased collaboration in areas such as codeshare arrangements, crew recruitment, and aircraft maintenance, fostering a more integrated aviation corridor between the nations. The expansion aligns with broader regional initiatives to bolster air travel and economic relations in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
