The aviation industry has taken a significant step toward environmental sustainability with the publication of a new industry-standard test fuel specification for unleaded aviation gasoline. Developed by VP Racing and LyondellBasell, this formulation marks a major hurdle toward the commercialization of high-octane unleaded avgas suitable for piston-engine aircraft.

The standard was announced on January 5 and has been tested on a Beechcraft Baron demonstration aircraft at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024. The test results aim to support the industry’s move away from leaded fuels, aligning with aviation’s broader environmental goals.

Developers of this fuel believe it can replace traditional leaded avgas and address regulatory and environmental concerns associated with leaded fuels. The publication of the fuel specification is expected to accelerate certification processes and industry acceptance.

This development comes amidst ongoing discussions about the future of avgas, with the FAA outlining a multi-phase plan to transition to lead-free alternatives by 2030. The new standard may serve as a foundational step toward achieving these goals, potentially transforming the general aviation landscape.

The publication emphasizes the aviation industry’s commitment to cleaner, sustainable fuels, which could mitigate emissions and foster innovation in piston-engine aircraft propulsion.
