The 42nd International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly held in Montreal reaffirmed the global aviation community's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Delegates from nearly 200 countries reviewed progress on sustainability initiatives, including the enhancement of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme (CORSIA), which has seen increased participation. The assembly emphasized the importance of harmonizing international policies to support decarbonization efforts amid a changing geopolitical landscape. Key adopted measures included new emissions standards for aircraft, improved monitoring and reporting methodologies, and initiatives to accelerate investment in clean aviation technologies such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Despite concerns over shifting political priorities, the consensus demonstrated a shared resolve to maintain aviation’s trajectory toward environmental sustainability and safety. The assembly’s decisions underscore a coordinated effort to foster a resilient and sustainable aviation industry over the coming decades.
