Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have launched an official investigation into a violent incident aboard a Flydubai flight that was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia following a reported altercation involving the pilots, with the co-pilot allegedly stabbing the captain and attempting to cause a crash.
The incident unfolded midair, prompting the captain, an Indian national named Smit Machchhar, to open the cockpit door and work with passengers to stabilize the jet during a dangerous descent. Passengers from Israel, India, and the UAE recalled how they managed to prevent a catastrophe thanks to the swift actions of the crew and fellow passengers.
Official Response and International Cooperation
UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi stated that judicial authorities consider the aircraft registered in the UAE and under its jurisdiction, which grants UAE law authority over the case. The nation's prosecutor's team will investigate potential links to terrorism or prior planning.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and announced that Israel would participate in examining the incident. Flydubai subsequently announced the suspension of its flights to and from Israel amid ongoing investigations.
"It looks very likely that he was going to down the plane," said Netanyahu, referencing the co-pilot’s background and intentions, which are under review by authorities.
This event raises ongoing concerns over cockpit security and the safety protocols of airlines operating in the region, prompting calls for enhanced safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
