On 15 August 2026, a Boeing 787-9 aircraft operated by Vietnam Airlines failed to clear the end of Munich's 4,000-metre runway during its take-off. According to a report by Germany's Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU), the aircraft began the take-off run with the brakes partially applied, which hampered acceleration. The aircraft eventually lifted off from the grass beyond the runway, struck approach lighting with its tail and main gear, and sustained damage including a tail strike and damaged tyres. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the 271 passengers, crew, or pilots onboard.

The investigation revealed that brake inputs were recorded during the critical phase of take-off, with the brake control units commanded to apply moderate braking. The aircraft attempted to rotate at about 163 knots, approximately 12 knots below the calculated speed, but failed to lift off on the paved surface. It became airborne from the grass approximately 240 metres beyond the runway end, hitting approach lights and damaging the aircraft. The crew then executed emergency procedures, jettisoned fuel, and safely returned to Munich.

The BFU is examining brake system components, including control units and electric actuators, to determine whether a technical fault or human intervention caused the unintended brake application. The cockpit voice recorder's data has been overwritten, so investigators rely on flight data and component testing. A final report will clarify the cause, serving as a reminder of the importance of proper aircraft handling during take-off.
