Iran has temporarily closed its airspace to unauthorized flights amid escalating regional tensions and ongoing protests within the country. The aviation authority announced that only international flights with official permission are permitted, effective from Wednesday night until January 15. This move has led to the suspension of all other air traffic entering or leaving Iran, affecting carriers and their schedules.

Several international airlines, including Lufthansa and ITA Airways, have announced the suspension of night flights to Iran and the avoidance of Iranian airspace until further notice. Indian airline IndiGo also reported some flight disruptions due to the closure, while a Russian Aeroflot flight returning from Tehran exemplifies these impacts. The U.S. has banned all commercial flights to Iran, with no direct routes currently in operation.

The decision to restrict flights comes amidst rising military and security concerns, including warnings of missile and drone attacks in various conflict zones. The U.S. is also withdrawing some personnel from the Middle East, with Iranian officials threatening retaliation if attacked. Germany issued a new directive advising German carriers against entering Iranian airspace, reflecting increased regional instability.

American and Iranian authorities continue to exchange accusations, with Iran citing casualties among security personnel and US-funded groups reporting thousands of deaths among protesters. The regional situation remains volatile, with international actors closely monitoring developments. The aviation industry continues to adjust operations in response to the evolving security environment.
