Istanbul Airport in Türkiye has been named the world’s most connected aviation hub according to the latest Megahubs 2026 report by OAG. This significant achievement sees Istanbul Airport overtaking London Heathrow, which previously held the top spot. The report highlights that Istanbul Airport now has direct connections to 337 destinations worldwide, marking its first time at the summit of the global aviation rankings.
Turkish Airlines plays a dominant role at the airport, operating approximately 80 percent of its flights. The report notes a decline in Heathrow's connectivity, with potential connections on its busiest day dropping 6 percent year-on-year, partly due to ongoing disruptions in Middle Eastern flight schedules. Meanwhile, Amsterdam Schiphol has ranked third, showing growth in both connections and destinations served.
Regional and Global Highlights
Kuala Lumpur Airport remains the leading aviation hub in Asia, with 154 destination connections, while Chicago O’Hare continues to be the most connected in the Americas, climbing from seventh to fifth position globally. The report underscores the evolving landscape of global air connectivity, with Asian airports accounting for the majority of top low-cost carrier hubs and regional growth in passenger traffic.
The rankings reflect ongoing shifts in the aviation sector, influenced by market dynamics, airline operations, and geopolitical factors, shaping the connectivity patterns of the world’s major airports.
