Italy’s ITA Airways is advancing aviation technology through the adoption of Iris satellite-based systems, aiming to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The airline's implementation of Iris technology, part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) initiative, represents a major step toward modernizing air traffic management (ATM) in Europe. Using satellite data, Iris allows airlines to optimize flight paths and altitude profiles, significantly decreasing fuel consumption and emissions.

Viasat Inc., a leader in satellite communications, has announced that ITA Airways will be the first European carrier to operate with this innovative system. Already deployed on four Airbus A320neo aircraft, Iris provides the foundation for trajectory-based operations (TBO) that help airlines avoid delays and fly more efficient routes. The technology's certification for Airbus A320 and A330 series ensures widespread low-risk adoption across European fleets.

Phased Deployment and Future Outlook

The Iris program is being rolled out in two phases: a validation period ending in 2025, and a commercial phase beginning in 2026. By 2032, over 1,100 aircraft across Europe are expected to utilize Iris, transforming air traffic management and contributing to Europe's environmental targets. The initiative aligns with the Single European Sky (SES) program, which seeks to enhance airspace efficiency and reduce congestion and emissions.

Although initially focused on Europe, the technology's scope is expanding globally. By 2028, Iris will be available to airlines worldwide, including Asia and the Americas. Overall, Iris promises to make air travel more sustainable by reducing fuel use, emissions, and operational costs while improving flight reliability and safety.

In summary, the adoption of Iris technology by ITA Airways underscores the airline's leadership in aviation sustainability. The system's ability to facilitate more efficient, greener flights aligns with broader industry and governmental efforts to combat climate change and modernize global air traffic systems.
