The Jersey-based airline Blue Islands has announced it has ceased trading and canceled all upcoming flights, citing financial difficulties. The airline, which employed approximately 100 staff, operated flights across the British Isles and to destinations such as Bruges and Paris. The disruption has prompted local authorities in Jersey to prepare contingency plans to ensure essential services and medical transfers continue uninterrupted.

Jersey's Minister for Treasury and Resources, Elaine Millar, expressed her concern over the airline's suspension, emphasizing efforts to work with an alternative carrier to maintain reliable air links for the island. She reassured the public that government support was readily available for affected passengers and that priority would be given to routes critical for medical needs.

Background and financial context

Blue Islands was established in 2006, evolving from an operation begun in 1999 to supply perishable goods to Alderney. The airline began passenger services in 2002 and rebranded itself in 2006. It expanded its network notably in 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it received a loan of £8.5 million from Jersey's government to secure its future, though as of June, the remaining balance was reported to be £7 million.

"We deeply regret the inconvenience that this will bring to your travel plans," the airline stated. Customers who booked directly are advised to contact their banks or credit card providers, while those holding bookings with its codeshare partner Aurigny are encouraged to reach out to that airline for further assistance.

The airline's fleet includes aircraft such as the Airbus A321 series and Boeing 737 variants, which have been staples of its route network. The suspension marks a significant development in regional air travel for Jersey and the surrounding Channel Islands region.
