Jetstar Airways, an Australian low-cost airline and subsidiary of Qantas, has announced the adoption of Viasat’s Amara in-flight connectivity (IFC) system across its fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The upgrade, which covers 11 aircraft, aims to improve passenger internet access on international flights, supporting streaming, messaging, browsing, and general internet use.
The installation process began earlier this month, with complete fleet integration expected to be finalized by mid-2027. This initiative is part of a broad refurbishment program, involving a multi-million dollar cabin upgrade, and signals Jetstar's commitment to enhancing passenger experience while maintaining low fares on long-haul routes.
Strategic Partnership and Future Outlook
Jetstar’s parent company, Qantas, already collaborates with Viasat for connectivity services. The new IFC system will leverage Viasat’s multi-network, multi-orbit platform, including ViaSat-3 satellites and future Telesat Lightspeed LEO constellation deployment. According to Jetstar's CEO Stephanie Tully, the investment in connectivity and refurbishment reflects a strategic move to improve service offerings and passenger satisfaction on international flights.
The integration of Viasat’s Amara system aligns with industry trends toward better inflight internet services and cabin upgrades, supporting Jetstar's objective to offer more value and connectivity in its evolving fleet.
