Kazakhstan is making substantial progress in strengthening its aviation industry and regional connectivity. The country is preparing for an audit by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which could allow direct flights to the U.S. by demonstrating compliance with international standards. Concurrently, Kazakhstan plans to acquire 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, expected between 2026 and 2035, to support the expansion of long-haul routes.

To facilitate this development, Kazakhstan is constructing a comprehensive Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) center in Shymkent, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign providers and attract international airlines. The center, scheduled to be completed in November 2027, will initially service Boeing 737 aircraft, with future expansion plans for larger models like the Boeing 777.

The country is also working on regulatory amendments, with support from FAA experts, to align safety standards and facilitate international assessments. Airport security evaluations by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration have been promising, with further audits expected following the full operationalization of long-haul aircraft.

Airlines such as Air Astana and SCAT are exploring new routes to Tokyo, New York, and regional destinations such as Tel Aviv and Shanghai, with launch timings contingent on aircraft deliveries. Despite staffing challenges, including reliance on foreign pilots, Kazakhstan’s aviation authorities are focusing on developing domestic expertise through training programs.

Overall, Kazakhstan aims to position itself as a key transit hub between Asia and Europe, leveraging infrastructure investments, regulatory improvements, and international cooperation to bolster regional competitiveness and economic growth.
