Kazakhstan has appointed U.S. aviation veteran Michael Daniel as chief executive officer of the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, a move linked to plans for direct flights to the United States. Daniel assumed his role on May 4, bringing over 40 years of civil aviation experience, including work with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and international safety programs.

He began his career at the FAA, serving in various capacities such as flight operations inspector and head of flight safety. His international work included leading the FAA’s offices in Singapore and Beijing from 2006 to 2009, overseeing foreign repair stations and safety assessments. Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee identified the launch of direct flights to the U.S. as one of Daniel’s main priorities, with officials noting that aircraft have already been acquired, but must pass compliance audits.

Completion of approval stages with U.S. regulators is necessary before these flights can begin. Airlines from Kazakhstan will need authorization from the U.S. Department of Transportation and assessment by the FAA to meet safety standards. Aviation expert Abul Kekilbayev commented that the appointment appears tied to this objective, emphasizing upcoming compliance steps for Kazakh airlines.

Vagit Ismailov, a Kazakhstani journalist, provided background on Daniel’s extensive career and insights into the potential impact of this leadership change on Kazakhstan’s international flight operations.

This move marks a strategic step in Kazakhstan’s efforts to expand its aviation connections with the U.S., aiming to enhance international mobility and economic ties between the two nations.
