Kazakhstan is advancing its green energy initiatives through a partnership with the US-based company LanzaJet to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in the Kostanai Region. During a recent meeting, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov discussed the project’s prospects with LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis and Vice President Stephane Thion, emphasizing the importance of localizing cutting-edge environmentally friendly fuel technologies.
The proposed plant, located in Rudny, is projected to produce up to 54,000 tons of jet fuel annually. It will utilize bioethanol from feedstocks such as grains, corn, and potatoes. A comprehensive feasibility study has confirmed the project's potential, and LanzaJet's technology is aimed at providing a low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuels, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with Kazakhstan's sustainability ambitions.
LanzaJet, established in Chicago, focuses on manufacturing ethanol-based aviation fuel and has attracted investments from notable global companies including Shell, Microsoft, and Airbus. This initiative supports green aviation development, enhances agricultural processing, and aligns with the country's climate commitments.
"The collaboration represents an important step forward for Kazakhstan’s energy transition and climate strategy,"
stated Prime Minister Bektenov.
The project’s next steps include exploring the creation of an integrated joint venture, with the goal of efficient implementation and sustainable operations, fostering Kazakhstan’s move toward a greener energy sector.
