Kenya Airways is actively expanding its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations through strategic partnerships and technological innovation. During the Dubai Airshow, COO George Kamal announced nearing an agreement with a major U.S. airline to enhance the airline's regional and international MRO capacity. The carrier is also in discussions with Middle Eastern MRO entities to reinforce its infrastructure, including a new hangar designed to support future collaborations.

Kamal emphasized the importance of growing local and continental MRO capabilities, citing the rising fleet size and operational costs that necessitate increased capacity and efficiency. The airline is also piloting artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize maintenance turnaround times and reduce lifecycle costs. After six months of trials, Kenya Airways reports a 12-15% improvement in turnaround time and a 5-6% reduction in costs.

Strategic Future and Industry Trends

The airline's initiatives are aimed at positioning Kenya as a regional MRO hub, leveraging partnerships and innovative technologies to support its expanding fleet and operational demands. This strategic focus aligns with industry trends towards automation and digitalization for airline maintenance operations.
