Kenya Airways has announced a strategic expansion of its cargo operations in 2026, including the deployment of a Boeing 747-400 freighter. This initiative aims to boost the airline’s capacity to serve key regional and international markets, reinforcing Kenya's position as a logistics hub in East Africa.
The airline’s CEO, George Kamal, confirmed that the added freighter has increased cargo lift capacity from approximately 70 tonnes to about 180 tonnes, with plans to further grow capacity to over 250 tonnes. This development supports the airline's broader strategy to facilitate trade and exports, especially for Kenyan exporters relying on efficient freight services.
According to the airline, the Boeing 747-400(BCF), ER-BYK, operated by Terra Avia under a medium to long-term partnership, is based in Hong Kong and recently operated routes to Dubai, Nairobi, and Malaysia. This partnership has already seen near 100 tonnes of inbound cargo and over 110 tonnes of exports delivered, helping stabilize supply chains amid global trade disruptions caused by geopolitical issues.
Kenya Airways' fleet also includes narrowbody cargo aircraft—two Boeing B737-300(SF)s and two B737-800(SF)s leased through GA Telesis—demonstrating its comprehensive cargo strategy. The airline’s cargo enhancement aligns with its ambitions to support regional trade expansion and improve connectivity across Africa.
