Kenya Airways is facing substantial financial difficulties largely attributable to the grounding of its Boeing 787-8 fleet. The airline announced that its FY25 earnings are expected to fall 25% below the previous year, a decline driven by the persistent grounding of three of its widebody aircraft. These grounded aircraft have caused engine shortages and disrupted long-haul operations, affecting routes to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

During the first half of 2025, Kenya Airways reported a loss of USD 94 million, marking a significant downturn from profits seen in prior years, including its first operating profit since 2017. The grounding of their Boeing 787 fleet has not only hindered network capacity but also reduced passenger revenue, highlighting the critical importance of these aircraft to the airline’s business model.

In July, the airline saw some improvement when one of the grounded 787s returned to service, but two remained on the ground as the industry faced widespread engine supply and maintenance challenges. The airline aims to have all remaining 787s operational by the end of 2025, with plans for a capital injection to support fleet renewal and expansion in 2026. The grounded aircraft include models registered as 5Y-KZA and 5Y-KZB, delivered in 2014, which are imperative to future growth and service recovery.

Despite these setbacks, Kenya Airways remains hopeful for a resolution and emphasizes the vital role of the Boeing 787 in its operations, with a limited timeframe to restore its fleet before the start of 2026. The situation underscores the broader industry-wide issues of engine supply constraints impacting global airlines.
