Korean Air is undertaking a significant modernization of its JFK cargo terminal to improve service quality, operational efficiency, and sustainability along the US East Coast. The airline has engaged Lödige Industries, a global leader in cargo automation, to implement the upgrades. Opened in December 2000, the terminal is among the largest in the eastern United States, with a capacity to handle 200,000 tons annually across its 17,065 square meters of warehouse space.

The modernization project involves deploying advanced automated systems, including two fully automated Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs) to improve ULD handling capacity. Fixed transfer vehicles will be replaced with Cargo Pallet Movers to allow more flexible transport and optimized space utilization. Additionally, 14 workstations will be upgraded to modern standards.

Enhancements to Temperature-Controlled Facilities

Part of the upgrade focuses on extending the Cool Chain capabilities, with the construction of a new refrigerated warehouse and extensive improvements to existing temperature-controlled areas. Upgrades include modernized temperature controllers, roller conveyors, and shutters to improve reliability and efficiency.

“JFK is our gateway for cargo services along the East Coast and a key hub in our growing global network. By modernising the terminal with state-of-the-art automation technology, we are ensuring long-term efficiency, higher safety standards, and increased sustainability of our operations,” said Junho Choi, Regional Manager at Korean Air Cargo.

Jonathan Hardy, Managing Director North America at Lödige Industries, emphasized that the upgraded facility will meet high customer demands and reinforce Korean Air's dominant market position, especially as JFK continues to increase its role in global commerce.

Inquiries about the project can be directed to editors and sales contacts at the respective organizations.
