Korean Air and Archer Aviation have announced a strategic partnership to introduce Archer’s Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in South Korea. This collaboration aims to establish South Korea as a leader in next-generation urban air mobility, with Korean Air planning to purchase up to 100 units of the aircraft.
The Midnight aircraft, designed to carry four passengers, has undergone significant flight testing, including performance flights covering approximately 55 miles at heights reaching 10,000 feet in 31 minutes. The partnership emphasizes leveraging Archer’s advanced eVTOL technology alongside Korean Air’s extensive experience in aircraft operations, maintenance, and aerospace manufacturing.
The joint initiative envisions replacing traditional short-distance ground transportation with rapid, low-noise electric air taxi flights, promising a safer, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative. Archer’s CEO, Adam Goldstein, stated that Korean Air’s industry leadership and strategic vision make them an ideal partner to accelerate this transition. Similarly, Jin Kyu Lim of Korean Air highlighted the potential to foster innovation and establish a foundation for widespread adoption of air mobility solutions in Korea.
This move signifies a broader trend towards integrating electric aircraft into mainstream transportation networks. The collaboration between Korean Air and Archer marks a significant milestone in deploying eVTOL technology within Asia, potentially transforming how people and goods move across urban landscapes in the region.
