Swiss logistics company Kuehne+Nagel and airline SWISS have formalized a strategic partnership to support the commercial deployment of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), produced by Swiss cleantech firm Synhelion. This collaboration aims to provide predictable, long-term demand for the fuel, starting in 2027, with a five-year offtake agreement for cargo shipments.

The agreement addresses one of the main challenges in SAF adoption: securing reliable demand to justify investment in production capacities. Synhelion’s technology, which converts sunlight directly into renewable liquid fuels without relying on biomass, offers a scalable alternative to bio-based SAF that is gaining regulatory and industry attention.

Market Implications and Industry Significance

By committing to dedicated SAF volumes for air cargo, Kuehne+Nagel is positioning itself as an early adopter in aviation sustainability. This move not only helps the companies meet their climate commitments but also encourages investment in the needed supply infrastructure. SWISS CEO Jens Fehlinger emphasized the importance of such partnerships, noting that SAF remains scarce and costly but essential for decarbonizing air travel.

As skepticism about technological breakthroughs persists, this deal signals that industry progress may depend more on proactive corporate commitments than on waiting for global mandates. The partnership underscores the critical role of secure, long-term demand in scaling new aviation fuels and advancing a sustainable future for air cargo.
