Logistics giant Kuehne+Nagel and Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) have announced a strengthened partnership aimed at advancing sustainable aviation. The collaboration focuses on scaling the production and utilization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), produced by Swiss cleantech company Synhelion, which converts sunlight into renewable jet fuel. This initiative includes a long-term offtake agreement enabling increased supply and technological innovation in the sector.

Starting in 2027, Kuehne+Nagel will purchase SAF from SWISS for its cargo operations via Swiss WorldCargo, under a five-year contract. This move emphasizes their joint commitment to reducing carbon emissions in logistics and aviation, offering customers a chance to lower their environmental impact.

Strategic Focus on Sustainable Aviation

"To meet the aviation industry’s climate targets, we need to accelerate synthetic SAF production," said Yngve Ruud, Member of Kuehne+Nagel's Management Board for Air Logistics. "Partnering with SWISS and Synhelion allows us to make this technology economically viable and available across our network."

"Sustainable aviation fuels are crucial for making air travel more environmentally friendly. Their scarcity and costs underscore the importance of strong partnerships," affirmed Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS. "Our collaboration signifies a key step towards commercializing Synhelion’s fuel and shaping a sustainable future for aviation."
