Kyiv Boryspil, Ukraine's premier airport, is strategically preparing for a swift restart once airspace restrictions are lifted and safety allows. Despite damages sustained during the ongoing conflict, the airport's infrastructure remains operational and maintained at a high level, with an estimated timeline of three weeks to one month for full scheduled flight services to resume.
Prior to the conflict, Kyiv Boryspil handled over 65% of Ukraine's air traffic and a significant portion of cargo. The airport CEO, Oleksiy Dubrevskyy, stressed the importance of regaining competitiveness with major European hubs and highlighted the airport’s resilience in maintaining key facilities amid ongoing challenges.
Market Recovery and Passenger Demand
The airport leadership expects a substantial increase in passenger flows driven by returnees and displaced persons. According to United Nations data, over 6.5 million Ukrainians have fled abroad, with an anticipated 30 to 40% returning post-conflict. This would generate a new VFR segment, boosting demand. Airlines like Ryanair, Wizz Air, and airBaltic are expected to reestablish routes quickly, supporting the recovery of Ukraine's aviation market.
“It is very important, and we appreciate the interest from our international partners and airlines, as well as Ukrainian air carriers,” said Dubrevskyy. “We feel a huge demand for airlines returning to the Ukrainian market on very short notice, which will have great potential for growth.”
While operational challenges persist, Kyiv Boryspil continues to serve as Ukraine’s main gateway. It has not reduced staffing levels significantly and continues to maintain its facilities despite the damages suffered since February 2022. The leadership remains cautiously optimistic about the future, emphasizing coordination with authorities to support the country’s recovery.
