LanzaTech and IFC Launch Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative in Oman
A partnership between US-based carbon recycling company LanzaTech and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) aims to develop the Sultanate's first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project. The initiative focuses on converting waste industrial gases into ethanol, which can be refined into eco-friendly aviation fuel, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting climate goals.
Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, highlighted that the project signifies a significant step in Oman’s circular carbon economy, aligning with regional efforts in the GCC to recycle and reuse carbon emissions. The initial phase involves a feasibility study assessing market prospects and financial viability with the goal of progressing to project implementation.
Utilizing LanzaTech’s proprietary biorecycling technology, the project captures carbon-rich gases directly from industrial sources, preventing their release into the atmosphere and converting them into various sustainable products, including fuels, detergents, and fibers. Currently, about six such plants operate globally, with Oman positioned to emerge as a key regional hub.
"Projects like this have the potential to produce 80,000 tonnes of SAF annually, advancing Oman Vision 2040, creating jobs, and supporting economic diversification," said Holmgren.
The initiative is expected to have a substantial environmental impact, reducing aviation-related CO₂ emissions by over 60% by 2050, and fostering economic growth aligned with national and regional sustainability strategies.
Moreover, IFC noted that this project aligns with Oman’s broader vision for sustainable industry and job creation, emphasizing its critical role in regional development efforts.
