The government of Laos has sold a 49% stake in its national airline, Lao Airlines, to Chinese aircraft manufacturer COMAC. This strategic partnership aims to reform the state-owned enterprise, improve operational efficiency, and address ongoing financial losses. According to a report in the Laotian Times, the initial proposal sought a controlling interest, but negotiations resulted in the Lao government retaining overall control of the airline.
COMAC is currently developing a business improvement plan, which will be submitted for governmental approval. Lao Airlines has been notable for its recent fleet developments, including becoming the first carrier outside mainland China to operate the C909 regional jet, with four units in service. The airline also operates four Airbus A320-family aircraft and seven ATR turboprops in various configurations, demonstrating its commitment to regional connectivity.
This move reflects broader efforts within Laos to modernize its aviation sector and strengthen its airline's competitiveness in the Southeast Asian region.
