Legal Dispute Over NBA and Emirates Airline Sponsorship Involving Orlando Lawyer

An Orlando-based attorney, Paul Edalat, has filed a lawsuit against the NBA, claiming he was unlawfully excluded from a major sponsorship deal with Emirates Airline. Edalat asserts that he played a pivotal role in facilitating initial negotiations between the NBA and Emirates as early as 2013, and was promised a 10% commission for his efforts. The legal complaint alleges that despite his involvement, the NBA proceeded with a different deal without acknowledging his contributions.

Background and Negotiation Timeline

Edalat's involvement began when NBA executive KiKi VanDeWeghe asked him to leverage his contacts in the Middle East to attract Emirates as a potential sponsor. He traveled to Dubai in 2014 with a letter from VanDeWeghe expressing the NBA's interest. Negotiations appeared to be progressing until they suddenly cooled off later that year. The NBA finalized a 10-year sponsorship agreement with Delta Airlines in 2015.

Recent Developments and Allegations

In 2024, the NBA announced a new multiyear partnership with Emirates, including NBA game broadcasts on Emirates flights and sponsorships. Edalat contends that he was excluded from this deal, despite having facilitated initial discussions. His lawsuit claims the NBA records do not support their denial of any prior agreement and seeks damages exceeding half a million dollars. The case is currently moving through courts in New York, with Edalat seeking acknowledgment of his contributions and compensation.

Legal experts note that oral agreements, especially when services have been performed, can be enforceable, lending support to Edalat’s claims. The NBA and Emirates have declined to comment on the ongoing litigation, leaving the matter unresolved and under legal review.
