Leonardo Helicopters has achieved a major milestone in rotorcraft innovation with the successful first flight of its Next Generation Civil Tiltrotor Technology Demonstrator (NGCTR-TD). The aircraft, adapted from the AW609 commercial tiltrotor, was flown from the Leonardo facility in Cascina Costa near Milan on December 19, 2025. This flight substantiates ongoing efforts to develop advanced tiltrotor technologies for civil applications.

This testing phase aims to validate new design features and flight performance capabilities, building confidence for future certification and commercial deployment. Leonardo Helicopters emphasizes that this achievement will influence the evolution of vertical liftcraft, potentially opening new markets in corporate, emergency, and other specialized sectors.

Industry analysts note that demonstrating such technologies supports Leonardo’s position as a leader in rotary-wing innovation. According to Tony Osborne, a defense and aerospace analyst based in London, the successful flight could accelerate the adoption of tiltrotor aircraft worldwide. The manufacturer plans to analyze the flight data in the coming months to refine the aircraft's capabilities and work towards full certification.

The ongoing development underscores Leonardo’s commitment to advancing vertical flight solutions, with the potential for broader adoption and new operational capabilities in civil aviation. The flight signifies a critical step in bringing next-generation tiltrotor technology to the market and enhancing rotorcraft performance and versatility.
