During the COVID-19 pandemic, a Carlisle-area man constructed a life-sized replica of a Spitfire aircraft in his garden, capturing the attention of neighbors and visitors. David Price, 62, was motivated by his passion for aviation and a trip to Folkestone, where he saw a real Spitfire. Over four years, he built the detailed model using wood and fibreglass, which eventually became a local attraction.
His project grew so large that the aircraft’s tail peeked out of the marquee, prompting him to engage with visitors directly. After the lockdowns ended, the replica was moved to the Hooton Park Trust in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, where it remains on display. Mr. Price, a volunteer at the Solway Aviation Museum, reflects on the high costs of acquiring an actual Spitfire, estimated at around two million pounds.
He also authored a book titled How to Build a Spitfire, sharing his experience. Additionally, he is assisting efforts to restore the Blackburn Beverley transport aircraft. With plans for future projects, Mr. Price teases that his garden may once again host aviation-related displays, continuing his passion for aircraft and community engagement.
