Loganair’s chief pilot, Amelia Findlater, has emphasized the importance of increasing female representation in aviation during International Women’s Day 2026. Despite women making up only about five percent of commercial airline pilots globally, Findlater’s career progression from manufacturing engineer to a leadership role illustrates the industry’s potential for change.

Findlater, who holds a degree in manufacturing engineering and management from the University of Strathclyde, transitioned into aviation after a serendipitous encounter with a friend at British Airways. She began her flying career at Loganair, praising the airline’s supportive culture and opportunities for advancement. She remarked,

“There isn’t necessarily a barrier to women flying, but we need the belief that we can do it and see ourselves doing it.”

Loganair, which has achieved a 15% female pilot workforce and maintained punctuality with 81% of flights arriving on time in 2025, continues to champion diversity with leaders like COO Natalie Bush and Safety Director Rebecca Borresen. Findlater advocates the ‘Give to Gain’ principle, focusing on nurturing pilots’ confidence and teamwork to improve safety and inclusivity.

She stated,

“Representation matters, and by supporting and mentoring others, we can help create an environment where everyone feels they belong.”

This story underscores the efforts within the aviation industry to foster gender diversity, highlighting the role of visible female role models in inspiring the next generation of pilots and aviation professionals.
