London City Airport Proposes Shallower Approach to Accommodate Larger Narrowbody Aircraft

London City Airport (LCY), renowned for its steep 5.5-degree approach, is contemplating a new, shallower approach at 4.49 degrees. This development aims to permit larger, newer narrowbody aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo to operate more effectively at the downtown London site, potentially expanding its operational capacity and attractiveness to airlines.

Currently, aircraft land on a steep approach, which limits the types of aircraft able to comfortably operate at LCY. The proposed modification could ease access for larger aircraft, which may help reduce congestion at other London airports and offer more direct flights within Europe.

According to Victoria Moores, the European Editor at Air Transport World, the initiative reflects a strategic move to modernize the airport’s infrastructure and meet industry demands. Stakeholders are evaluating the safety, noise, and operational impacts before any deployment, with hopes that the new approach could be implemented soon.

If successful, the plan would mark a significant milestone in the airport's development, broadening its appeal for larger aircraft and possibly leading to increased service offerings and connectivity options.
