Lufthansa is planning a unique Airbus A380 flight from Hong Kong to Munich scheduled for 20 March 2026. This rare event highlights the continued relevance of the superjumbo in Lufthansa's fleet, despite industry trends favoring more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft.
The airline also plans to reposition the aircraft from Munich back to Hong Kong on 17 March 2026, with the dedicated charter flight LH2573 departing Hong Kong at 07:00 and arriving in Munich at 13:20 local time. The Airbus A380-800 configured in a four-class layout offers premium services, including eight first-class suites and 78 business class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, complemented by 52 premium economy and 371 economy seats.
Looking ahead, Lufthansa maintains its fleet of eight Airbus A380s into the early 2030s due to rising demand on long-haul routes, despite pandemic-related grounding and delays in acquiring new aircraft from planemakers. The airline is undergoing a fleet rebuild, investing in more efficient aircraft types amidst delays with Boeing's 777X and 787 Dreamliner programs, and Airbus A350. The resurgence of the A380 allows Lufthansa to meet customer expectations while adapting to operational challenges.
