Lufthansa Technik (LHT), a leading provider in aircraft maintenance, has indicated that fuel-related flight reductions could potentially impact its profitability later in the year. The company reported a strong first quarter, with revenues increasing by 12% year-over-year and stable earnings, but warned that ongoing geopolitical tensions and rising fuel costs pose risks to future growth.
In the first three months of 2026, Lufthansa Technik's pretax earnings reached €158 million ($186 million), with an EBIT margin of 7%. Challenges such as material shortages, particularly for engine maintenance, and unfavorable currency exchange rates, affected its profitability. The company remains vigilant in monitoring the situation in the Middle East, as escalation could lead to further reductions in airline flight capacity.
Impact of Rising Fuel Costs and Geopolitical Tensions
The recent announcement by Lufthansa Group to cut 20,000 European flights during the summer highlights the significant impact of rising fuel prices on airline operations and profitability. Despite economic headwinds, Lufthansa Technik benefits from an increasing share of external business, now making up 78% of its revenue, indicating a growing diversification away from its parent airline group.
"The extent to which the conflict impacts our business depends on its duration and effects on our customers," said Christian Leifeld, CFO of Lufthansa Technik. "While the crisis has not yet significantly affected our results, we see early signs of flight capacity reductions that could temporarily slow growth."
Despite potential headwinds, Lufthansa Technik remains resilient, supported by sustained demand for MRO services and proactive measures to mitigate the effects of currency fluctuations and supply chain disruptions. The company's leadership emphasizes its role as a stabilizing force within the Lufthansa Group's broader portfolio, positioning it well for future stability amid uncertain geopolitical conditions.
