Malaysia Airlines forecasts a significant increase in travelers during the upcoming Golden Week, expecting to carry over 52,000 passengers on its China routes, representing a 21% rise from the previous year. The holiday period, spanning from September 26 to October 11, 2026, marks one of the busiest travel seasons in China. The airline has noted that it carried more than 600,000 passengers in the first half of 2026 across its China network, with an impressive load factor of 84%. The carrier now serves nine gateways in China, including daily flights to Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Changsha, complementing existing routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, President and Group CEO of Malaysia Aviation Group, reaffirmed that China remains a key growth market. He highlighted efforts to position Kuala Lumpur as a strategic gateway for Asia and beyond by expanding the network, upgrading fleets, and forging partnerships to cater to Chinese travelers at scale. The airline is also planning to enhance its digital presence through collaborations with Huawei, Weixin Pay, and TravelSky Technology Ltd, aiming to improve booking and travel accessibility for Chinese consumers.

"Guided by Malaysian Hospitality, we remain committed to bringing people and places close together across China, Malaysia and the wider region,"

said Captain Nasaruddin.

Additionally, Firefly, Malaysia Airlines’ sister airline, intends to commence daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kunming, subject to regulatory approval, utilizing Boeing 737-800 aircraft. These developments reflect the airline’s strategic focus on expanding its reach and digital capabilities in the Chinese market, supported by recent signings of MoUs with leading technology firms to facilitate digital services and distribution channels.
