KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 — The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) will transfer operational responsibility for MASwings to AirBorneo starting January 1, 2026, following a recent ownership transfer agreement with the Sarawak government. This strategic move aims to enhance regional air connectivity and streamline airline operations in East Malaysia.
According to a MAG official statement, AirBorneo will inherit full legal and operational duties, including flight services and passenger management, as the current MASwings branding may remain temporarily visible during the transition phase. The company expressed gratitude to passengers, partners, and stakeholders for their cooperation during this period of change.
Background of MASwings
Founded in 2007, MASwings was East Malaysia’s first commuter airline, initially operating with Fokker 50 and Twin Otter aircraft. In 2009, it upgraded its fleet to ATR 72-500 aircraft to improve service reliability and operational efficiency. Over its operational history, MASwings has conducted over 430,000 flights and transported more than 19 million passengers, contributing notably to employment across the aviation sector.
MAG emphasized its commitment to ensuring a seamless transition and fostering regional growth. The airline’s strategic realignment supports ongoing efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity for Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan, ensuring sustainable development for the community and economy alike.
