Amid ongoing disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, Malaysia has announced several measures to bolster its aviation sector. The government will provide airfare discounts of RM50 to passengers traveling within Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia during the Gawai and Kaamatan festive periods. This subsidy scheme, backed by a RM5 million allocation, is projected to benefit approximately 100,000 travelers between May 15 and June 14.
In addition to fare discounts, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia will extend the payment deadlines for aviation-related charges to 60 days from the original May 1 deadline. Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that these initiatives are intended to maintain connectivity and restore confidence in Malaysia's tourism industry. He highlighted that at the peak of the crisis, about 75% of daily flights were canceled, which raised concerns over economic losses estimated between RM15 and RM150 billion for the year.
Loke noted that the measures emerged from discussions between the Transport Ministry and various industry stakeholders, aiming to ease financial pressures on airlines and ensure the continuity of air services. The government also pledged to collaborate closely with relevant parties to enhance resilience within the aviation sector and address the challenges posed by current disruptions.
