Sarawak’s new state-owned airline, AirBorneo, is preparing to commence commercial flights in July 2026, integrating advanced artificial intelligence technologies to enhance operational efficiency and passenger service. Partnering with IBM Malaysia and Salihin Digital, the airline plans to automate booking processes, streamline flight management, and offer travelers real-time updates, particularly focusing on improving connectivity between Sarawak and Sabah regions.
AirBorneo's CEO, Megat Ardian, stated that AI systems will automate routine tasks, allowing staff to focus more on customer service and safety. The collaboration with IBM Malaysia aims to leverage data analysis for proactive decision-making, minimizing delays and improving punctuality by anticipating operational challenges before they occur.
In addition, Salihin Digital contributes expertise in AI infrastructure integration, facilitating the airline's rapid digital transformation. The move is expected to boost regional economic growth by attracting investments, expanding tourism opportunities, and strengthening air links within Borneo. Once operational, passengers can expect faster check-in procedures, timely flight information, and greater ease in booking and managing their travel plans.
This initiative marks AirBorneo as a regional pioneer in AI-powered aviation services, potentially setting a benchmark for future technological adoption in the industry. The airline aims to demonstrate how innovative technology can revolutionize customer experience and operational reliability in Southeast Asian aviation markets.
