Manipur, a northeastern Indian state known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, is facing significant connectivity challenges due to high airfares and suspended airline routes. The state’s government has officially appealed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to intervene and address these issues, which include soaring fares charged by major airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Alliance Air. The suspension of key routes has made travel to Imphal costly and less accessible, impacting tourism, commerce, and local residents seeking affordable transportation options.

Many flights servicing Imphal, the state's primary airport, are now significantly more expensive than in neighboring regions, making air travel less viable for travelers. The Manipur government has emphasized the importance of restoring suspended routes under schemes like RCS or UDAN to improve connectivity. Efforts are also underway to establish international flights, potentially connecting Imphal directly to Southeast Asia, which could boost tourism and economic growth.

Impact on Tourism and Local Economy

The current air connectivity issues have resulted in a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, with recent numbers showing only about 17,000 visitors in 2024 compared to 179,000 in 2019-20. This decline has adversely affected local hospitality services, including hotels, guided tours, and transportation providers, leading to economic softening in the region. The Manipur government advocates for increased airline competition and lower fares to stimulate tourism, improve local employment, and support infrastructure development.

Officials hope that enhanced connectivity and international direct flights will attract more foreign tourists, especially those from Southeast Asia, the US, and Europe, eager to explore the state's rich cultural and natural attractions. The government’s advocacy emphasizes that affordable, regular flights are crucial for unlocking the economic potential of Manipur through tourism and commerce.

Ultimately, the success of these initiatives hinges on effective intervention by MoCA and cooperation from airline carriers. Improvements in air connectivity are expected to revive the local tourism sector and foster broader economic development in the region, transforming Manipur into a more accessible destination in northeastern India.
