Recent massive cancellations by India’s dominant airline, IndiGo, have caused widespread disruption in domestic air travel, with significant fare increases on other carriers. Fares on the Delhi-Mumbai route, among the busiest, are now ranging from Rs 21,577 to Rs 39,000 for one-way economy tickets, forcing travelers to search for alternative options. IndiGo, which holds approximately 64% of the market share, expects to resume normal operations between December 10 and 15, but the immediate impact has been a surge in prices on airlines like Air India, SpiceJet, and others that account for the remaining capacity.

This surge is even more pronounced on regional routes, with Udaipur-Delhi and Udaipur-Mumbai flights now costing upwards of Rs 26,000 and Rs 35,000 respectively. Passengers such as Mahima Shukla and several business travelers have voiced their frustrations over the operational uncertainties and soaring costs. Industry analysts describe this period as perhaps the most challenging in recent Indian aviation history, with capacity constraints and declining passenger confidence.

The crisis has prompted intervention from aviation regulators, including advisories from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation aimed at stabilizing flight operations. The situation underscores IndiGo’s market dominance and highlights the ripple effects of its cancellations on fare prices and overall airline competitiveness. Moving forward, the stabilization of the sector will depend on effective management of airline operations and passenger safety assurances.
