Melbourne Airport experienced a record-breaking January 2026, with a significant rise in international passenger arrivals. The airport welcomed over 688,500 international travelers in a month marked by the Australian Open and other major events, boosting its total passenger count to nearly 3.4 million, making it the third busiest month ever. On January 9, alone, more than 45,000 international arrivals were processed, highlighting the airport’s capacity and importance in the region.
CEO Lorie Argus attributed this growth to Melbourne’s international appeal and recent infrastructure investments, including a new baggage handling system designed to double outbound capacity and ongoing expansions of the terminal footprint. She noted that each international flight supports substantial economic activity, amounting to approximately $190 million annually per flight, and sustains thousands of Victorian jobs. The airport plans further upgrades, such as a third runway and new pickup/drop-off zones, to manage increasing demand and improve passenger experience.
Economic and tourism impact
Minister Steve Dimopoulos highlighted the positive impact on Victoria’s economy, emphasizing the role of international visitors in supporting hotels, restaurants, and events. The record numbers reflect a recovering and thriving aviation sector that is vital for the state’s tourism industry and regional growth. Melbourne’s strategic investments aim to strengthen its position as a key international hub in the Asia-Pacific.
