Swiss aviation technology company Metafuels announced a $24 million funding round aimed at commercializing its synthetic methanol-to-jet fuel pathway to support decarbonization of the aviation industry. As the sector faces the necessity to increase sustainable fuel production over 150 times by 2050, Metafuels' innovative aerobrew product seeks to address this demand by enabling large-scale, cost-effective production of renewable jet fuel.

The funding will facilitate the advancement of flagship facilities, including a demonstration plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland and a commercial facility in Rotterdam. These projects are aligned with upcoming regulations such as ReFuelEU Aviation and are designed to produce drop-in fuels fully compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. The methanol-to-jet pathway is considered crucial given its scalability and independence from constrained feedstocks like waste oils, which limit other SAF options.

Saurabh Kapoor, CEO of Metafuels, emphasized the importance of industrial-scale deployment, stating that the pathway allows airlines to decarbonize without operational changes. The company is also working toward ASTM accreditation, expected in early 2026, a vital step for large-scale commercial adoption. Industry experts see this technology as a key to meeting long-term aviation fuel demand and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which currently account for over 2% of global CO₂ emissions. UVC Partners managing director Johannes von Borries highlighted the potential for synthetic fuels to transform the aviation infrastructure and industry growth.
