Michelin has introduced the ‘Air X Sky Light’ aircraft tire, marking a significant advancement in aerospace technology by reducing weight and extending service life of aircraft tires. Unveiled during Dassault Aviation’s Falcon 10X rollout, the tire incorporates innovative radial architecture with advanced materials, aiming to streamline aircraft performance.
The development, which spanned several years of testing and industrial collaboration, was first publicly shown at the 2023 Paris Air Show. The new design achieves a 10–20% reduction in weight and a corresponding increase in durability, translating into fuel savings and lower CO2 emissions for airlines.
Michelin explains that the lighter tires can lower operational costs by diminishing fuel consumption and reducing maintenance expenses. The tire’s structure utilizes ultra-high-strength carcass materials, hybrid cords, and fabrics tailored for high loads and speeds faced in modern aviation. The company plans to develop this tire family further for broader commercial application, including retrofit solutions for existing aircraft fleets.
This new product underscores Michelin’s commitment to advancing sustainable aviation practices and enhancing aircraft safety and efficiency in the evolving aerospace industry.
