September 11, 2026 — Moldova's airspace was temporarily closed on Tuesday afternoon, September 9, following the transit of a military-grade drone across the country. The security measure led to the delay of three scheduled departures from Chisinau International Airport (KIV), according to AirHelp.

The airspace shutdown, prompted by concerns over the unidentified drone, lasted for several hours. Authorities subsequently reopened the airspace, confirming it was secure, which allowed all delayed aircraft to depart later the same day.

Impact on Operations

The temporary closure directly affected three flights scheduled to depart from Chisinau. One of the affected flights was reportedly transporting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was en route to Norway.

Passengers and airlines experienced disruptions, though the situation was resolved within the same day. Due to the nature of the incident—a security event beyond airline control—passengers affected by these delays are not eligible for compensation under standard regulations, as noted by AirHelp.

Prior Incident and Security Concerns

This airspace closure occurred a day after a separate drone incident in northern Moldova. On Monday evening, September 8, a drone crashed in the region, resulting in four fires. No injuries were reported from this prior event.

The repeated drone activity has raised security concerns in the region. Moldovan authorities acted swiftly to ensure national airspace security following the transit of the military-grade drone.

Resumption of Services

Following a thorough assessment and confirmation of airspace safety, operations at Chisinau International Airport resumed to normal. All previously delayed flights were cleared for departure, mitigating further prolonged inconvenience for travelers.
