Moldova has reported a series of incursions by Russian-made drones entering its airspace, raising serious concerns about aviation safety and regional security. The latest incident occurred on November 25, with authorities quick to respond by grounding flights and diverting commercial aircraft to neighboring Romania. President Maia Sandu condemned these acts, describing them as intimidation tactics by Russia amid ongoing tensions related to Ukraine.

The situation unfolds against the backdrop of a large Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, which resulted in casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia launched around 36 missiles and nearly 600 drones in a recent offensive. Moldova confirmed that two of the drones involved were identified as Russian and had flown over Moldovan territory before entering Ukraine.

Regional Security and Diplomatic Response

During the incident, Moldova's civil aviation authority ordered the temporary closure of its airspace, emphasizing the serious threat posed by these unauthorized incursions. The Moldovan government also convened with Russia's ambassador, Oleg Ozerov, over the drone crash, signaling their concern over worsening diplomatic relations. Since Maia Sandu's election in 2020, Moldova has faced accusations from Moscow of anti-Russian actions, though it maintains its stance of sovereignty and regional stability.

These repeated incursions highlight the ongoing volatility in the region and the challenges faced by Moldova as it balances its aspirations for EU integration with external pressures. The government continues to denounce Russia's actions and affirms its commitment to national security while supporting Ukraine amidst the conflict.
