The Airline Operations Research Group (AORG) has concentrated efforts on enhancing airline safety and efficiency through technological solutions. One of their key projects, the FACT airline operations tool, is designed to mitigate the impacts of severe winter weather on airport surface operations. Such weather conditions can cause taxi delays, runway closures, and complicate de-icing procedures, all of which diminish airport capacity and increase delays.

Recognizing the importance of shared situation awareness, AORG collaborated with industry members to develop predictive models and decision-support tools. The Winter Weather Airport Capacity Model inside FACT forecasts changes in departure rates based on weather reports, aiding better planning and resource allocation during storms. These innovations aim to reduce cancellations and delays, improving overall safety and throughput.
