Neste and World Fuel Services have announced a five-year extension of their partnership that aims to expand the availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) within the UK and Europe. This initiative will make SAF accessible at over 100 airports, supporting the aviation industry's efforts to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations, including the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and the UK SAF mandate.

The collaboration capitalizes on World Fuel’s extensive distribution network and Neste’s growing SAF production capacity, which includes the Rotterdam refinery capable of producing up to 500,000 tons annually. By scaling SAF supply, the companies seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation operations and promote sustainable fuels in commercial, business, and general aviation sectors.

Strategic importance for industry decarbonization

This partnership underlines the importance of enhancing SAF availability to help the aviation industry meet its environmental goals. Neste has committed to increasing its SAF capacity from 1.5 million to 2.2 million tons per year by 2027, which aligns with global efforts for sustainable development in aviation.

"Through this extended partnership, we reaffirm our dedication to providing scalable and reliable sustainable fuels for Europe’s airports, contributing to the reduction of aviation emissions," said Duncan Storey, Senior Vice President of World Fuel. Neste’s Vice President for Renewable Products, Carl Nyberg, added that scaling SAF capacity and leveraging airport networks will be crucial for industry-wide decarbonization efforts.

Overall, the agreement represents a significant step toward mainstreaming sustainable aviation fuels, making a long-term contribution to aviation’s transition to greener energy sources.
