GE Aerospace and nondestructive testing specialist Waygate Technologies showcased a new engine borescope inspection tool at MRO Americas designed to assist maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) professionals in delivering more consistent and accurate inspections of GEnx-1B and -2B engines.
The innovative solution integrates guided workflows and artificial intelligence (AI) assistance into Waygate’s Mentor Visual iQ+ video borescope. During inspections of high-pressure turbine blades, the system offers real-time recommendations for optimal views and the correct positioning of the borescope tip, along with image overlays to guide inspectors.
Dean Rheaume, North American sales director for Waygate, emphasized the challenges faced by inspectors in capturing consistent imagery, citing differences in techniques among personnel and the steep learning curve associated with new engines and inspectors. Such variability can lead to errors, premature engine removals, and reduced aircraft availability, potentially causing significant operational issues.
He highlighted that as more consistent inspection data is collected, it will enable trend analysis and foster analytics-driven maintenance strategies. Overall, the new tool aims to improve inspection quality, reduce variability, and enhance maintenance decision-making.
