Lucknow-based airline Shankh Airlines is preparing to commence flight operations in early January with an initial fleet of three Airbus aircraft. The new carrier aims to connect Lucknow with key Indian cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, focusing on offering affordable fares to attract middle-class passengers and those flying for the first time. The airline also plans to expand into international markets by 2028 or 2029, as part of its growth strategy.

Chairman Shravan Kumar Vishwakarma highlighted that the airline’s initial phase will serve destinations within Uttar Pradesh, with plans to increase its fleet shortly. His vision emphasizes making air travel accessible, akin to public transport, and breaking the notion that flying caters only to the wealthy. Vishwakarma, with a modest background himself, stressed the importance of mindset and determination in entrepreneurship, drawing from his own journey from small businesses into the aviation sector.

Business Model and Growth Outlook

The airline’s aircraft have been obtained through leasing arrangements, supported by its parent company, ensuring there are no immediate funding constraints. Ticket prices are expected to remain stable during festive periods, though business-class fares may be priced higher than competitors. Vishwakarma expressed the objective of creating employment opportunities and democratizing air travel.

Reflecting on his evolution from small-scale trading to aviation, Vishwakarma said the idea for Shankh Airlines originated four years ago. He explained that gaining the necessary regulatory approvals and understanding the aviation system was fundamental to the airline’s formation. The current fleet includes Airbus models, with more aircraft expected soon, as part of ongoing expansion plans. Overall, the airline aims to serve more parts of India in the coming years, positioning itself as a catalyst for affordable air transportation in the country.

He urged young entrepreneurs to pursue their big ideas without fear of social judgment, illustrating his own success as proof that such dreams are achievable. The airline’s name, Shankh, carries cultural significance and ties to Vishwakarma’s trading business, emphasizing the brand's local roots and identity.
